So, you’re worried about how your network and your resources will withstand a cyber attack? That’s where a penetration test (often referred to as a pentest) comes into play. In this course, Laying the Foundation for Penetration Testing for CompTIA PenTest+, you’ll learn the basics of the types of pentests that are performed. First, you’ll learn the goals you’re trying to achieve. Next, you'll explore setting up a lab environment for pentesting. Finally, to protect you and your environment from accidental damage to your production network, you’ll discover how to set up the parameters within your new lab environment. By the end of this course, you'll gain a foundational understanding of the importance, and implementation, of pentesting.

Course Overview Hey everyone, my name is Dale Meredith, and I want to welcome you to my course, Laying the Foundation for Penetration Testing for CompTIA PenTest+. Now I'm personally a Microsoft trainer, as well as an EC-Council trainer. I've also done a lot of security consulting, as well as I speak at security conferences. This course is actually designed to help IT professionals who want to develop pen testing skills, which will actually help them to identify system vulnerabilities and find solutions to potential issues that could expose their organization to outside threats. If you're looking to prepare for the CompTIA PenTest+ certification or you're just looking for a good foundation to start your cybersecurity career, this course is your starting point. Now some of the topics we're going to tackle in this course is, first of all, we need to have that understanding of why we pen test. We'll also go through and make sure that you have an understanding of the communication channel during a pen test. And don't worry, I'm going to make sure that you protect yourself legally while doing an engagement. And part of that protecting yourselves is creating a playground to practice your skillsets. By the end of this course, you'll know how to plan out your engagement, how to cover your bases so that you can protect yourself and your organization, and you will have created a lab environment that allows you to continue to test new techniques and tools without jeopardizing your own production environment. Before beginning this course, you should be familiar with some basic network concepts. You should have some experience with security, maybe either skills of a Security+ individual or CEH. That's the Certified Ethical Hacking course. And be open minded to start thinking like an attacker. Now, after you're done with this course, you should feel comfortable in diving into different types of courses, more higher-end level courses, maybe even your Certified Network Defender or possibly the CompTIA CASP+ certification. Now I'm excited for you to join me on this journey as we learn how to start your penetration testing skillset with Laying the Foundation for Penetration Testing for CompTIA PenTest+, here at Pluralsight.
